The Canon has a longer zoom, I think 20x while the Panasonic has a 13x. The HMC150 is a great camera. It's light, has a great wide angle on its lens and records to SD cards. I'd choose the 150. See more cameras at my HowNowVideo(dot)com website under Get Gear. Good luck deciding.

Thank you for all the helpful videos. I am looking at upgrading from SD to HD and I wanted to know if there is any reason I should buy the Canon XH-A1 over the Panasonic HMC-150? One of the main reasons I am leaning towards the Panasonic is because it records to SD cards rather than tape, but I wanted to see if there were any advantages the Canon had over the Panasonic. Hi I was wondering if you could recommend a camera about the same quality that records on SD cards. I want to get into recording weddings and shooting small projects. Or maybe this format is what I should be using. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks

yeah.. all cameras lose some focus when moved. its good for nature capture but, when i capture group of people(5 or more) one by one that time also getting blur!! i mean when i focus one by one person's face. I think should take one course for it. Thanks

Hi this camera records HDV (tape based HD). Utube will convert the footage when you upload from your editing software. Once you recorded the HVD format is ready for editing on your PC (Via firewire input). You can transcode (convert on input) your HDV to another codec on input to your PC. Or convert the edited footage from HDV to another format after editing and then upload to utube it's upto you. I've had excellent results letting Utube handle the conversion after editing .

Cameras lose focus when moved because they are re-calibrating the focus point which is set at the centre of the cameras lens. When panning the cameras focus point is constantly changing so may become temporally out of focus, this is normal, but should not take a significant time for the camera to auto correct once you stop moving the camera. Try using the XHA1 menu to change to "instant autofocus" (it's in the menu) which should speed up any lag. Low light can slow focusing.

No. The Canon XHA1 ...

No. The Canon XHA1 would be consider a last-generation technology. Even though it's a good camera, it records to tape using the HDV codec. You can add a firewire recording unit to the camera and in that way record directly to digital, but this camera doesn't use SD cards like the newer cameras do. Canon does make a replacement that records to memory cards, the Canon XF300. Read about it at my Buy Gear link at HowNowVideo(dot)com. Technology is changing quickly. Tape is going fast.

Both of those cams a good, but people are wanting HD format now. If you are a biginner and not doing this for money, you would do great, I LOVED my XL1, but this XHA1 is the deal..

The SD card is used for custom presets and stills, NOT recording footage. I assume you are new to cameras.

if you convert or ...

if you convert or use a mac then you're aren't editing avchd you're editing the converted format. if you use premiere than there's an explanation: back when this video was made premiere just had starting support for AVCHD where recently they upgraded the system to help playback and rendering, so more recent versions of premiere require less power for codecs like AVCHD. if you don't use premiere than I have no idea.

You might want to ...

You might want to try another SD card. The SD card is only used to transfer specific data, like custom camera setting, between cameras or to your computer. As I recall the SD card isn't really used for much. But it sounds like you're having a card error, so try another card. If that doesn't work, your camera may need to go into the shop, but like I said, I don't think the SD card does much of anything on the XHA1. Good luck.

@dteubner Hey, I was hoping you could help me out. i recently bought this camera and everything worked fine except for when i try to record in the SD card. it reads the card but says "problem in card position" Your show helped me see that this camera isn't really made for the card, but It should still work. Hopefully someone can help me. I am looking to switch from SD to HD. I have a question on the file itself. It says the camera records in 1080i. I am not familiar with this. Would I use my editing program to edit in 1080i, then when I upload to youtube will it be converted to a "p" setting. I ask this because I on youtube you only have 720p and 1080p options. Will this affect the quality? I am not sure if I get this camera If I should edit a certain way in my program or something.

avchd is does not take a quad core to edit, i had a hp 3gb ram, fine for editing, same with macs, ia have the new 2011 macbook pro13" perfect for editing
