If I had to choose my favorite piece of music for the human voice, it would undoubtebly be Solveig's Song from Grieg's "Peer Gynt". It's in the deceptive simplicity of the piece where lies the beauty. But, strangely enough, of all the versions available there is not one which seems to be the ultimate version. Even Lucia Popp's version, good as it is, is lacking something. The present recording doesn't feature any singers at all, replacing the singer with violins. It remains my favorite version of this song, as it somehow manages to capture each strand of Solveig's sorrow. I hope you will enjoy this :-)! PS If possible, I would be quite interested in learning your favorite renditions of this song ;-)!

Edvard Grieg: Solveig's Song (from 3rd act of Peer Gynt, transcription for harp) Willy Postma, harp Edvard Grieg (1843 -- 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is best known for his Piano Concerto in A minor, for his incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt (which includes Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King), and for his collection of piano miniatures Lyric Pieces. Peer Gynt, Op. 23 is the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play of the same name, written by Grieg in 1875. It premiered along with the play on 24 February 1876 in Christiania (now Oslo). Later, in 1888 and 1891, Grieg extracted eight movements to make two four-movement suites: Suite No. 1, Op. 46, and Suite No. 2, Op. 55. Harpist Willy Postma was born in Amsterdam. After attending Schools in Rotterdam, Paris and New York, she came to Noway at an early age and has been affiliated with the Trondhein Symphony Orchestra since 1964. In 1970 she won the International Harp Competition in Israel. She has had an all-round career as soloist, chamber-music performer and teacher. Postma has recorded several CD albums and has been a frequent guest on television and radio programmes. In 1980 she started the Nordic countries' first harp class in Trondheim, a class she still conducts. Since 1991 she has been a teacher at the Norwegian State Academy of Music and since 1992 also at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Information and pictures were taken from the internet.
